That's It. I'm Done. Time for my Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon Taper

Ran over to the River Park Track (aka North Park University Track) this morning, to relish in the cool temps with a little speed work.
Preparing to run a "Magic Mile" at the track
It turns out it was a tad on the humid side, but that's okay, I need to train in a little bit of uncomfortable weather for Sunday's Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon. Now that I'm back from my run, I have decided on ending my running streak at 54 consecutive days. It just feels like I need a break after (intentionally) punishing my legs for almost two months straight. I have only run 35 miles this week, but I don't want to run another half marathon again (like I did in March) coming off of a high mileage week. So my taper plan for the next three days is:
  • Friday (swim, stationary bike) pick up race packet
  • Saturday (stationary bike)
  • Sunday (race!)
Stay tuned for my race pace plans, which will most likely all go out the window based on the actual temps/humidity and sunshine on Sunday morning. The forecast (at this moment) for 7am on Sunday is 76 degrees with 66% humidity.

On a side note, I saw a bird in Chicago that was yellow!  Usually all I see are pigeons, sparrows, robins, sea gulls and grackles:  Any ideas what kind of bird this is?

  1. You are so wise. I am going to do a 20 mile trail run, and then spend all weekend drinking and eating fair food at a country music festival. I am doing an experiment to see if multiple wrongs can make a right.

    Spoiler: Probably won't end well.

    1. Wow, a 20 miler followed by elephant ears, deep fried Twinkies, cans of Bud Light, two-stepping and then a half marathon? I think you can make it work! Now, I am reconsidering my taper schedule. Maybe I will do a 20 miler followed by hanging out at our neighborhood beer festival then the half! A much better plan. :-)

  2. Have a fun race on Sunday! I love hearing about that race each year.

I think that is a gold finch.

    1. Thanks, I had a blast at the RnR Half race last year. It was a great course through downtown and temps were in the 60s. Since we all know it will be hotter this year, I am at least hoping for rain or an occasional cool breeze off the lake. Thanks for the id on the gold finch. I don't know why we hardly see any colorful birds like that in the city. I think the pigeons and seagulls gang up on them or something.

  3. Good luck Sunday! I'll also be out there enjoying the humid hot conditions. Still holding out hope for a freak cold front to pass through!

    1. Thanks. Good luck to you too! A cold front would be nice, but in lieu of that, how about at least a slight cool lake breeze or a nice morning two hour long rain shower starting shortly after 6:30am?
