Yes, in the end the "2" prefix is just a silly arbitrary number that's been assigned too much value. I should be grateful that I can even run with a "3" in front of my time, more than a few people my can't say they've done. Yes, everything I've heard about slowing down with aging turns out to be wrong. There always seems to be room for improvement. Small town was nice, because it more resembles the solitude of the runs I do on a daily basis rather than the "rock concert" type atmosphere of the bigger city ones. However, I could do without the mixed-distances co-mingling with the marathon for so much of the race - especially when every second counts! I'm celebrating by preparing for Ravenswood! I need help. Thanks again! :)Pete Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09655789227670205830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1804307342977220552.post-53463528163594710792016-04-22T09:17:41.205-07:002016-04-22T09:17:41.205-07:00Thanks Zenaida!!Thanks Zenaida!!Pete Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09655789227670205830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1804307342977220552.post-83972273390469224272016-04-22T07:16:33.906-07:002016-04-22T07:16:33.906-07:00Oh, and what's your verdict on the small town ...Oh, and what's your verdict on the small town race versus larger?Erinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09695890488184466585noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1804307342977220552.post-38240805699212410522016-04-22T07:15:58.519-07:002016-04-22T07:15:58.519-07:00I am so thrilled for you, Pete. You had an excellent race, paced nearly perfectly, which is something else you've tried to do for a long time. Sure, it's easy to get fired up about those seconds that didn't let you have a marathon time prefixed by a 2, but you now know that you totally CAN do it. It's been awesome to see you continue to improve over time and as you "grow up" bc it's all too easy for us to think that we're at our fastest when we are younger. BS, BS, BS. Thanks for continuing to inspire us all, and dude, I hope you're still celebrating! I guess that weaving is something to be expected in races where there are mixed distances sharing the same finish line. It's just that I'd never run a race that had other distances so it was a little bit of a surprise. However I've never done that before and also it might have been too distracting for the race, because knowing myself, I'd be looking down at my watch every 2 seconds to adjust my pace. Running with pickle juice was something I decided on just a couple of days before the race and it seemed to work on preventing leg cramps which was my main goal by drinking it. Yes, since I am injury free and in a good place, I don't need to do anything radical. I'm just going to try to get back to my regular training, stay healthy, and maybe add just a few more miles once July rolls around. That should be enough to put me in an even better spot by October. Yeah, those 21 seconds are still hard to swallow, but I'm gonna start looking forward now (as well as do some yoga to chill!) It was my first time drinking pickle juice and I had zero cramps, so I'll probably drink it during my next marathon. No doubt that sub 3 will be yours in Chicago, weather gods willing. While I certainly enjoy the big city marathons, I've run my best at smaller ones. I will agree with you though that trying to come in weaving past walking half marathoners is no picnic. Sorry you had that frustration. You are in such a great place because you've worked to hard to be there. Woo!

It's hard to think about all the "what-ifs"...what if the walkers weren't in your way at the end...what if it had been 5 degrees cooler...what if there had been a 3:00 pace group but every race is going to have those imperfect things and you have to learn to deal with them (which you definitely did!) and that only helps you prepare for future races! Now you can take the lessons you learned and things that you did do very smartly and apply them to your next race and get that sub-3!
